Introduction
This website was first set up to describe and record my work as an independent researcher into complex systems, particularly those which include human beings - social, socio-technical and socio-environmental systems. It has now been extended to cover my political interests and activities. In future, I intend to expand the political material, and to make the links between these two areas of activity explicit.
I left full-time employment as a researcher, primarily a modeller of social and socio-environmental systems using agent-based simulation, at the James Hutton Institute in 2012, but have continued to work and publish in this area, both alone and with former colleagues. I am interested in how complexity comes to exist, and persist, in domains ranging from the purely abstract (cellular automata) to the biological (evolution and ecology), to the socio-historical. However, leaving full-time employment has also left me with more time, and more freedom, to pursue political interests; and the vital and increasingly urgent problems of environmental damage, war, gross inequality and attacks on civil liberties have led me to put increasing amounts of time and energy into this work - primarily but not only within the Scottish Green Party, which I joined in late 2014.
